What 'Biodegradable' Actually Means on a Textile

Biodegradable is not a property a fabric simply has. So what does biodegradable mean on a textile? It describes what happens to a material under specific conditions — a given environment, temperature and timeframe. Without those conditions stated, the word tells a buyer almost nothing they can specify or defend.

Why is ‘biodegradable’ a conditional claim?

Almost any organic material will break down somewhere, eventually. The useful question is never whether it degrades but where, how completely, and over what period. A fibre that breaks down in an industrial composting facility held at elevated temperature may behave quite differently in a garden compost heap, in soil, in seawater, or compacted in landfill with little oxygen.

This is why a bare claim on a hangtag is close to meaningless. The same fabric can be accurately described as biodegradable under one test environment and inaccurately under another. The condition is the claim. It is also why biodegradable textiles cannot be compared with one another on the strength of that one word.

Industrial composting, home composting and soil are not the same thing

Industrial composting runs hot, with controlled moisture and active management. Home composting is cooler, slower and highly variable between one garden and the next. Soil burial is different again, and marine conditions different still.

A material certified against an industrial composting standard has not thereby been shown to break down in a home compost bin. Treating those as interchangeable is one of the most common ways a technically accurate test result becomes a misleading consumer claim — usually without anyone intending to mislead.

Why do blends complicate the picture so much?

A fabric that is part natural fibre and part synthetic does not partly biodegrade in a useful way. The natural portion can break down while the synthetic portion remains, leaving a weakened but persistent structure rather than a material that disappears.

Finishes, coatings, dyes, sewing thread and trims matter for the same reason. A cellulose base can be entirely capable of degrading while a coating on its face is not, and the finished product behaves like the least degradable component in it. If you want to understand why this matters for end-of-life generally, the same logic drives why blended fabrics are hard to recycle.

Does biodegradable mean better for the environment?

Not automatically, and this is where the word does the most damage. Degradation is one attribute among several. A material that breaks down quickly but required intensive inputs to produce is not obviously preferable to a durable material that stays in use for years.

There is also a disposal-route assumption buried in the claim: biodegradability only delivers anything if the product actually reaches an environment where it can degrade. A compostable item in a landfill is, for practical purposes, just an item in a landfill.

What is changing in how these claims can be made?

EU rules on environmental claims tighten from 27 September 2026, when Directive (EU) 2024/825 begins to apply.1 Its approach is to restrict generic environmental wording that is not substantiated, and biodegradability claims are among the categories it addresses directly.

For a sourcing team the practical read is simple: wording that survives scrutiny will be wording tied to a stated condition, method and timeframe. Vague adjectives get harder to defend commercially, regardless of whether the underlying material is good.

One point is worth stating plainly, because it is widely misreported: the separate Green Claims Directive proposal is stalled, not formally withdrawn — the Commission announced in June 2025 an intention to withdraw it, but no formal withdrawal has been published. The instrument that actually applies from September 2026 is 2024/825.

What should a buyer ask before putting the word on a product?

Five questions. Under what conditions was degradation measured — industrial, home, soil or marine? What test method was used, and can you see the report rather than a summary? What percentage of the material broke down, and over what timeframe? Does the tested sample include the finish, coating, dye and thread that will be on the finished product, or only the base fibre? And what disposal route does the claim assume the end user will have access to?

If the answers are adjectives rather than conditions, the claim is not yet substantiated — which is a documentation problem to solve with the supplier, not necessarily a reason to reject the material.

How does this fit into a sensible material selection process?

Treat biodegradability as one input, weighted by whether the disposal route it depends on actually exists for your customer. For many products, durability and repairability influence total impact more than end-of-life degradation does.

Where the claim genuinely matters — short-life items, packaging, products likely to end up outside a formal waste stream — insist on the condition and the method. Frequently asked questions

Is a biodegradable fabric the same as a compostable one?
No. Compostable generally refers to breaking down under defined composting conditions within a set timeframe, leaving no harmful residue. Biodegradable is the broader and vaguer term, and on its own does not specify the environment or the period.

Can a fabric be part biodegradable?
A blend can have a portion that breaks down while the rest persists, but that is rarely a useful outcome — you are left with a degraded, weakened structure rather than a material that has gone. Finishes, coatings and thread count toward this too.

Does natural fibre automatically mean biodegradable?
Not necessarily. The base fibre may be capable of degrading while dyes, finishes or coatings applied to it are not, and the finished textile behaves like its least degradable component.

Will we still be able to say biodegradable after September 2026?
Substantiated claims tied to a stated condition, method and timeframe remain possible. What gets harder is generic unsupported wording. Ask suppliers now for the method behind any claim you intend to carry forward.
