What Is Hemp Fabric?

Hemp fabric is a natural textile made from the bast fibre of the hemp plant, a fast-growing crop that needs little irrigation and few inputs and can improve the soil it grows in. Those agronomic traits are central to its lower-impact story. Hemp cloth is strong, breathable and naturally resistant to wear, and it softens with use while keeping its structure. For a deeper introduction, read our material guides.

How Is Hemp Fabric Made?

Hemp stalks are retted to loosen the bast fibre, then broken and scutched to separate fibre from the woody core. The fibre is spun into yarn — often blended with cotton or other fibres for handle — and woven into fabric, then finished. The crop’s speed and low input needs make it an efficient fibre source.

Why Brands Choose Hemp Fabric

  • Low-input, fast-growing crop: high yield with low water and pesticide use.
  • Very durable: strong fibre that lasts and softens with use.
  • Breathable & natural: a cool, breathable hand.
  • Biodegradable: undyed and uncoated, it breaks down in soil or composting conditions; dyes, coatings and synthetic blends slow or prevent this.

Certifications Available

We work within recognised certification and verification systems relevant to hemp fabric, including OEKO-TEX and, for organic-hemp grades, GOTS on applicable grades. Documentation for specific grades is available on request as part of a sourcing conversation.

Sampling & Minimums

We keep sampling fast and minimums flexible, so emerging brands and established labels can both develop with us. Tell us your product type, target hand-feel and direction, and we will dispatch relevant swatches. We typically reply quickly to all sampling enquiries.

How We Vet Every Supply Partner

We do not just resell whatever is cheapest. Before a material reaches your sampling table it passes a four-step check, so the swatch you hold is one we would put our own name behind.

2Document checkCertification and conformity paperwork reviewed before approval.
3Hand samplingPhysical swatches assessed for colour, grain, hand-feel and finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is hemp fabric sustainable?

Hemp is a high-yield, low-input crop. Undyed, uncoated hemp fabric is cellulosic and breaks down in soil or composting conditions; dyes, coatings and synthetic blends slow or prevent this. Processing still matters; we detail this per grade.

Is hemp fabric soft?

Pure hemp is crisp and softens with use; blends with cotton give a softer hand from the start.

Is hemp fabric durable?

Yes — hemp is one of the most durable natural fibres, well suited to workwear and bags.
