What Is Sisal?
Sisal is a strong natural fibre extracted from the leaves of the agave plant, a hardy, drought-tolerant succulent grown in dry regions. Because it thrives on land that suits little else and is plant-derived and biodegradable, it is a durable lower-impact fibre for matting, rope and interior textiles. How Is Sisal Made?
Mature agave leaves are cut and crushed to separate the long fibres from the leaf pulp in a process called decortication. The fibres are washed, dried and brushed, then spun into yarn or twine and woven or knotted into the finished product. The plant continues to produce leaves over its lifespan before flowering.
