Recycled PU leather and standard PU leather often perform similarly in the hand, because the difference usually sits in the backing or the polymer feedstock rather than in the surface you touch. Knowing which layer carries the recycled content is what makes the claim checkable.

Which layer actually carries the recycled content?

A coated synthetic leather is a stack: a textile backing, one or more polymer layers, and a surface finish. When a supplier says recycled, the honest follow-up is which layer they mean. Recycled content most often sits in the backing textile, sometimes in the polymer, and only rarely across the whole construction.

This matters because a percentage quoted against one layer reads very differently from the same number quoted against total product weight. Ask which basis the figure uses before you put it anywhere near a product claim.

Does recycled PU leather perform differently in use?

In most constructions the surface polymer determines abrasion resistance, flex behaviour and cleanability, so a recycled backing changes the sustainability story more than the performance story. Where recycled feedstock is used in the polymer itself, batch-to-batch consistency becomes the thing to watch rather than raw strength.

The practical consequence is that you should not expect a durability penalty by default, and you should not assume equivalence either. Ask for the same test method on both, and compare like with like.

Standard PU remains the reference point for cost-sensitive volume work where no recycled claim will be made. Recycled PU suits products where a substantiated recycled-content figure carries real commercial weight and the documentation burden is acceptable.

Can you see chain-of-custody documentation for the specific batch you will receive? And is the surface finish identical to the standard version, or has it changed?

If a supplier answers with a single percentage and no basis, the number is not yet usable. That is a documentation gap to close, not necessarily a reason to walk away.

Treat recycled PU leather as one option on a spectrum rather than a straightforward upgrade. It reduces reliance on virgin polymer input where it is genuinely present and documented, and it changes little where the recycled share is small or sits only in a backing.
