Recycled vs virgin polyester is a choice every buyer of synthetic fabric eventually faces.

Recycled polyester (rPET) is polyester spun from recovered plastic — most often clear PET bottles — rather than from newly extracted petroleum. For most apparel, bag and accessory applications it performs almost identically to virgin polyester, while keeping feedstock in circulation. The real difference for a buyer is not hand-feel; it is traceability, certification and consistency of supply.

“Switch to recycled polyester” sounds like a simple line on a brief. In practice it is a sourcing decision with trade-offs worth understanding before you specify it. What is the actual difference: recycled vs virgin polyester?

Both are the same polymer — polyethylene terephthalate. Virgin polyester is made from petrochemical raw materials; recycled polyester is made by reprocessing existing PET, either mechanically (flaking and re-extruding) or chemically (breaking it back to monomers). The finished fibre can be effectively the same. According to the Textile Exchange Materials Market Report 2025, recycled polyester accounted for around 12% of global polyester production, and the large majority of it is sourced from recycled bottles rather than from textile-to-textile recycling.

That last point matters for how you talk about it. Bottle-derived rPET diverts plastic from one waste stream, but it is not the same as closed-loop textile recycling — and a careful buyer keeps that distinction honest in their own marketing.

Does recycled polyester perform as well as virgin?

For most uses, yes. Strength, abrasion resistance, water resistance and colour-fastness are comparable, which is why rPET is widely used in linings, outerwear shells, bags and accessories. Mechanically recycled fibre can show slightly more variation in shade and tenacity batch to batch, because the input stream is more variable than virgin pellet. The practical answer is to specify your performance requirements and validate them with sampling, rather than assuming the “recycled” label costs you anything in performance.

How do you verify recycled content?

This is where most sourcing conversations should slow down. A “recycled” claim is only as good as the documentation behind it. The recognised system for recycled inputs is the Global Recycled Standard (GRS), which tracks recycled content through the supply chain and also covers social and environmental criteria. Ask whether the material is certified, ask for the percentage of recycled content, and ask whether transaction certificates can be produced for your specific order.

When does virgin polyester still make sense?

Honesty matters here too. There are applications where a buyer may still reach for virgin fibre — extremely tight colour-matching across large repeat orders, or specialised technical specifications where input consistency is critical. The gap is narrowing, but pretending it does not exist helps no one. The right approach is to set your real requirements first, then see whether recycled fibre meets them — and in the large majority of fashion and accessory uses, it does.

What to confirm before you specify rPET

Before recycled polyester goes on your tech pack, confirm four things: the recycled-content percentage, whether GRS (or equivalent) certification is available for your order, how shade consistency is managed across batches, and how sampling works so your team can validate it in the real product. Get those answered and the switch is straightforward; skip them and “recycled” becomes a claim you cannot stand behind.
